WrestleMania season is upon us. The TLC pay-per-view will be the end of a tumultuous 2020 that saw some really amazing things (Roman Reigns heel turn, Return of Edge), and some not-so-amazing things (RAW Underground, Retribution) happen, but overall I believe it was a good year for WWE.
The Royal Rumble (my personal favorite pay-per-view) is next month and Vince McMahon has a multitude of avenues he can travel down to ultimately reach the Grandest Stage of Them All!
One rumored match that could headline WrestleMania is the current Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs The People’s Champ Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Who is the true head of the decorated Anoa’i Family? Samoan vs. Samoan. The Big Dog vs. The Brahma Bull. To me, this is obviously a match worthy of this type of magnitude, just like when McMahon brought back Goldberg to dethrone the Fiend. Plain and simple, it’s not the right choice for right now. Sure, it’s a big money match, and people will probably go nuts when they hear about it, but I truly believe the product will not match the hype. A la Undertaker vs Goldberg.
I am all for giving the rising, up and coming superstar a chance at glory over a washed-up, over-the-hill, seasoned veteran who had his chance in the sun. Someone who continuously puts in the work needed to be the Universal Champion. My personal choice would be for Big E to win the 2020 Royal Rumble and have him headline WrestleMania vs. Roman Reigns. That’s big time right there. At one point and time Vincent Kennedy McMahon was choosing between Roman and Big E to be the face of the company. We all know who he ended up choosing, and the rest is history. What a storyline that would be. Roman rubbing it in Big E’s face how he was looked over and the paths both superstars have traveled since.
The Rock has reportedly said that he will only agree to a match with Roman if fans are in attendance. That does not look like it’ll be possible by the time WrestleMania rolls around, so that match is unlikely, thankfully. Goldberg has recently called out Roman Reigns on Twitter using his catchphrase “You’re Next!” Why not use that match at the Royal Rumble. I’ll take the 2 minutes of finishers and then an anti-climatic ending at that pay-per-view. I am done seeing those matches at WrestleMania. Give me two men with an unquenchable hunger for the Univeral Championship, slugging it out for 30 minutes, giving us, the fans, a match we deserve. Make it happen Vince.
